The History of Summer Slam

In the winter of 2001 a few brave people from Victoria decided to take on the challenge of having a lacrosse tournament. A group of 10 people started brainstorming and working on plans. By August their idea had become a reality. Men and women's teams came from as far away as Hawaii and California. It was a wonderful weekend for all, from the outstanding competition to the salmon BBQ. The success of the tournament allowed us to continue and reach the point we are at today.

The Summer Slam grew to become a large tournament which now includes a men's elite division, women's elite division, and a master's division. Each year has brought new teams including teams from Baltimore, Portland, Washington State, California, Vancouver, and of course many local teams from Vancouver Island, in addition to introducing new social activities and the ever-popular beer garden.

The original goal of the Summer Slam was to help nurture the development of field lacrosse in Victoria. Through the years we have been able to meet this goal. We have also provided scholarships for local athletes, as well as sponsorship for local teams to travel to various tournaments. We are also able to help support various national teams that local players play on. The Summer Slam continues to give back to field lacrosse players and programs in the Victoria area.

We thank all the teams, past and present that have made the Summer Slam what it is today. Without those teams the tournament would not exist. We also thank the volunteers, organizations, and sponsors that have helped with the Summer Slam through the years. The countless hours that these people have given to the Summer Slam is appreciated beyond words.
